Bayern Munich interested in signing Arsenal's history-making teenage striker of Nigerian descent
Published: May 02, 2024
Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have set their sights on Arsenal's teenage striker Chido Obi-Martin according to a report from The Telegraph UK.
The 16-year-old sensation has been making waves in the football community with his impressive goal-scoring record, including a staggering 7-goal haul against Norwich City Under-18s last weekend that took his tally for the season to 28 goals in the U18 Premier League.
The Nigeria-eligible player entered into the history books as the top-scoring Arsenal player in a single U18 Premier League season, surpassing cap-tied United States international of Nigerian descent Folarin Balogun who tallied 25 over the course of the 2018-2019 campaign.
Obi-Martin's talent and potential have not gone unnoticed, with the young forward already representing both England and Denmark at junior level.
His recent performance for Denmark in the Under-17s European Championship qualifying campaign has only added to his growing reputation.
However, Arsenal face a challenge in keeping hold of their young star, as English academies brace themselves for another summer of dual-nationality teenagers opting for new clubs in the European Union.
Under FA rules, Obi-Martin cannot sign a professional deal with Arsenal until his 17th birthday in November, but other European clubs can offer him a professional contract at 16.
Bayern Munich are among the top clubs interested in Obi-Martin, and Arsenal are in negotiations with the teenager's representatives to try and keep him at the club.
The Gunners are keen to retain their young talent, but the lure of first-team football and a professional deal at 16 may prove too enticing for Obi-Martin to resist.
Obi-Martin's case is not unique, with many other young players in Premier League academies facing similar temptations.
Arsenal had to fight hard to secure the future of another leading academy prospect, Ethan Nwaneri, who is the youngest player in Premier League history.
As the summer transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen where Obi-Martin will end up.
