Super Eagles roster update: Finidi calls up Enugu Rangers star to replace injured Victor Osimhen
Published: May 28, 2024
The Super Eagles have been dealt with a major blow ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin next month.
As reported by the official X handle of the Super Eagles, Victor Osimhen has suffered an injury which will rule him out for four weeks and will now be replaced by Rangers international left-back Kenneth Igboke.
Osimhen hasn't featured for Nigeria since the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in February, where he played in all games and registered four goal involvements.
The 25-year-old missed the back-to-back friendlies against Ghana and Mali in March due to an injury and will now have to wait to make his first appearance under new gaffer, Finidi George.
The absence of the 2022/2023 Serie A top scorer is a big blow for the three-time Africa champions who have started their FIFA World Cup qualifiers campaign poorly.
They have only garnered two points from the opening two games in the qualification series and will have to target maximum points against South Africa and Benin to get their campaign back on track.
In the absence of Osimhen, the Super Eagles' attacking department still remains strong, boasting the presence of UEFA Europa League final hero Ademola Lookman, Bundesliga Rookie of the Season Victor Boniface, Paul Onuachu and Terem Moffi.
