Super Eagles camp update: Boniface, Onyedika, Iheanacho, Ndidi, 9 others report for duty pre-Bafana Bafana
Published: June 02, 2024
Bundesliga Rookie of the Season Victor Boniface and Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika have arrived at the Super Eagles camp ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers clash against South Africa and Benin.
They join Leicester City duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho and nine others who have reported for duty ahead of the vital qualification games.
Boniface hasn't featured for the Super Eagles since the 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe on matchday two of the World Cup qualifiers played last November.
He missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to an injury and enjoyed a stellar campaign with Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists to help Xabi Alonso's side win the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal.
The 23-year-old will be one of the players coach Finidi George will be relying upon heading into the back-to-back friendly games, particularly in the absence of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
Since receiving a call up for AFCON,Onyedika has been a regular member of the squad and started in the 2-0 loss to Mali in the International friendly game in March and also came on as a substitute in the victory over Ghana.
The Nigerian midfielder played a crucial role for Club Brugge as they scooped the Jupiler Pro League title, featuring in 21 games in the regular season before going on to play nine times in the Playoffs where he scored his three league goals of the season.
He is set to slug it out with Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka for a place in the middle of the park, a task he has found difficult in his time as Super Eagles player, having started just three of the seven games he has played for the three-time African champions.
Players in camp: Ibrahim Olawoyin, Stanley Nwabili, Terem Moffi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Kenneth Igboke, Wilfred Ndidi, Samuel Chuwkueze, Victor Boniface, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Raphael Onyedika, Ismaila Sodiq, Benjamin Tanimu, Ojo Olorunleke
