2026 World Cup qualifier: Bafana Bafana stranded in Port Harcourt due to Uyo Airport closed
Published: June 05, 2024
Bafana Bafana's players and officials have arrived in Nigeria ahead of their 2026 Fifa World Cup qualification game against the Super Eagles on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
As published on their official X account, they arrived at the Port Harcourt Airport on Wednesday night and have been cleared by the local authorities.
By the time of their arrival, the officials of Uyo Airport had closed for the day and as a result will have to stay at Port Harcourt for the night before taking a flight to Uyo on Thursday.
Bafana Bafana sit second in Group C of the World Cup African qualifiers, having garnered three points from their opening two games and will have to pick up at least a point against the Super Eagles to boost their chances of qualification.
They will be without Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana for the clash as he picked up an injury against Orlando Pirates in the final of the Nedbank Cup, a domestic club competition in South Africa.
There are also concerns regarding 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Best Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and right-back Khuliso Mudau ahead of the crunch tie against the Super Eagles.
Meanwhile, all the twenty three players called up by Finidi George for the double-header World cup qualifiers have reported for international duty in Uyo.
Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman and Maduka Okoye linked up with the team on Wednesday.
