Proposed transfer of former Super Eagles invitee to Chelsea faces major obstacle
Published: June 06, 2024
Chelsea's quest to bolster their attacking options with the signing of former Super Eagles invitee Michael Olise has encountered an unexpected obstacle.
The Blues' reluctance to allow their players to participate in the summer's Olympic Games may hinder their chances of landing the highly sought-after winger.
The former Reading winger, who was included in the France 2024 Olympic Games squad, has been identified as a top target by Chelsea's new coach Enzo Maresca and the club's hierarchy.
However, the club's policy of restricting players from participating in the Olympics may prove to be a significant stumbling block in their pursuit of the 25-year-old.
Respected journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed in an exclusive interview with GIVEMESPORT that Chelsea have a history of preventing their players from representing their nations at the Olympics, citing the examples of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Malo Gusto, and Benoit Badiashile.
The only exception has been Lesley Ugochukwu, raising questions about whether Olise would be allowed to participate in the Olympics if he were to join the Blues.
This development has thrown a spanner in the works for Chelsea, who are eager to strengthen their squad ahead of a campaign that will include Conference League action.
Olise's impressive form for Crystal Palace, which has seen him notch 10 goals and six assists despite missing 19 Premier League outings through injury, has made him a hot commodity in the transfer market.
Chelsea will face stiff competition from Liverpool and Manchester United, who are also vying for Olise's signature.
The Blues' hesitation to allow their players to participate in the Olympics may give their rivals an advantage in the pursuit of the highly coveted winger.
