'She's from Nigeria' - Chelsea new boy reveals why his mom has a soft spot for the Blues
Published: June 09, 2024
London-born Nigerian central defender Tosin Adarabioyo has revealed why his mother has a soft spot for Premier League giants Chelsea.
Tosin became Chelsea's first signing under new coach Enzo Maresca after putting pen to paper on a four-year deal this past week and will complete his move to the Blues on July 1, after the expiry of his contract with Fulham.
A homegrown player with Premier League experience, he tallied three goals in 78 top-flight appearances during his time at Craven Cottage.
Tosin made his professional debut in an Emirates FA Cup fifth-round match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where he was assigned the challenging task of marking one of the most physical players in the world at the time, Diego Costa.
And although Chelsea ran out 5-1 winners against the Citizens, the former England youth international received rave reviews from the fans and media for his performance.
Over the years, Chelsea have had some of the top African players in their ranks including John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses, Celestine Babayaro, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Samuel Eto'o, Mohamed Salah and George Weah.
Tosin's career started with Manchester City, yet he noted that his Nigerian mother had a liking for Chelsea, largely because of their African players.
He told Chelsea's official website: "My mum was gassed when she heard the news about me signing for Chelsea. She’s very happy.
"She loved back in the day when we had all the African players because obviously she’s from Nigeria, so she’s always had a soft spot for Chelsea."
Tosin and Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho were in the Manchester City side that lost 2-1 to a Chelsea team with Ola Aina in defence in the final of the 2015 FA Youth Cup at Stamford Bridge.
