NFF sources: Forty-seven days after appointment as Super Eagles coach, Finidi throws in the towel
Published: June 15, 2024
Finidi George has resigned from his position as the coach of the Super Eagles, sources in the Nigeria Football Federation have informed allnigeriasoccer.com.
The decision of the former Ajax Amsterdam winger to vacate his position could have stemmed from the Nigeria Football Federation decision to hire an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles.
The appointment of a Technical adviser would see George lose his control over the team, a position that is likely to be untenable to the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner.
Finidi became the head coach of the three-time African champions 47 days ago after the departure of José Peseiro who had led the West African side to a second place finish at the 2023 AFCON.
He was saddled with the immediate responsibility of getting the Super Eagles a ticket at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after they had had a poor start to the qualification campaign was also expected to qualify the West African side to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the fortunes of the African side in the World Cup qualification campaign didn't improve, no thanks to a draw with South Africa at home and a disappointing loss to Benin led by former coach Gernot Rohr.
Following the disappointing results against the Bafana Bafana and the Cheetahs, a meeting was convened by the NFF where it was decided that a Technical adviser be appointed, a decision which seems to have affected George's to leave his position.
