Everton's first summer signing Iroegbunam hopes Aston Villa old boy Young can take him under his wing
Published: June 27, 2024
England U20 international of Nigerian descent Tim Iroegbunam has expressed his excitement about reuniting with his former Aston Villa teammate Ashley Young at Everton and he's hoping the experienced fullback will mentor him at the Toffees.
Iroegbunam became Everton's first signing of the summer transfer window after putting pen to paper on a three-year contract, until June 30, 2027.
Young joined Everton on a season-long deal last summer following his release by Aston Villa and recently extended his contract with the Merseyside club.
Iroegbunam shared the same pitch with Young in three games during his time with Aston Villa, against Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup, Brighton & Hove and Leicester City in the Premier League.
The Anglo-Nigerian youngster acknowledged that having a familiar face among his new teammates would be beneficial.
Speaking to Everton's official website, Iroegbunam said: “I’m looking forward to seeing him again. He was always on to me, I’d say that!
"But I knew it came from a good place – he was always pushing me, encouraging me and giving me advice as a young player.
"Obviously, he’s been through it himself and has had an amazing career so far. It’ll be good to play with him again and hopefully, he takes me under his wing.”
Iroegbunam has the ability to play as a holding midfielder or a box-to-box midfielder.
