'Very good, strong and quick' - Walker talks up Hearts new signing Oyegoke
Published: June 27, 2024
Former Jambos forward Jamie Walker has praised Hearts new signing, Daniel Oyegoke, saying he has the potential to become a top player.
Walker, who played with Oyegoke at Bradford City, described him as 'very, very good' and praised his athletic ability, strength, and quickness. He also noted that Oyegoke grew into his role at Bradford, becoming the team's best player by the end of the season.
"Athletically he's very good, strong and quick. When he first came he played right wing-back and he was kind of in and out the team," Walker told Football Scotland.
"I don't think he had played much men's football, I think he'd had a loan spell at MK Dons. So he was in and out the team a bit, trying to find a position."
"But towards the end of the season he played right centre-back in a three and he was very good. You could see he was getting a bit more confident and in the last five or six games he was probably our best player." He added.
Walker believes Oyegoke is best suited to playing as an attacking right-back, a position where Hearts have struggled since Michael Smith left.
He also praised Oyegoke's confidence and ability to learn and grow, saying he will be a great addition to the team.
"I think he's more an attacking right-back. I think it's a position Hearts have struggled with the last couple of seasons since Michael Smith left.
"He was so consistent and a hard person to follow. I think he's (Oyegoke) a very confident lad. He'll be going there thinking and wanting to play every week.
"He kind of grew into the role at Bradford so I'm sure the Hearts fans will give him time to do that. He's obviously young, he's only 20, so he'll take a time to bed in to the club.
"I spoke to Dan quite a lot, spoke to Naisy, Gordon Forrest and one of the scouts, they were all asking. I gave him good reviews and I'm hoping he can go there and do well."
The 21-year-old's signing is seen as a coup for Hearts, who paid a fee to Brentford to secure his services.
Walker believes the club is hoping to make a profit on Oyegoke in the future, and wouldn't rule out the possibility of him playing in the Premier League one day.
The Anglo-Nigerian who is a product of Arsenal's Hale End Academy, has been capped by England from U16-U20 levels.
