Confirmed: Hibernian sign ex-Nigeria U20 international and England C defender Marvin Ekpiteta
Published: June 28, 2024
Through a statement on their official website, Scottish Premiership club Hibernian have announced the signing of former Nigeria U20 international Marvin Ekpiteta.
A central defender by trade, Ekpiteta has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with Hibs, following the expiration of his contract with EFL League One outfit Blackpool.
The 28-year-old trained with the Flying Eagles in 2013 before the Fifa U20 World Cup but was not included in the final squad for the tournament in Turkey, before making his debut for England C in a friendly against Estonia U23s in October 2018.
While at Blackpool, he appeared in 143 matches across all competitions, scoring twelve goals while producing four assists.
Ekpiteta's standout season at the Seasiders was in 2021-2022, where he was named Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.
The following season, the six-feet-four-inch defender wore the captain's armband on multiple occasions, and was on target against Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup.
Hibernian manager David Gray describes the Super Eagles hopeful as a central defender who is big, strong, dominant, very athletic, and an asset in both boxes.
Ekpiteta had stops at Oxford United, Chelmsford City, Witham Town, Concord Rangers, East Thurrock United and Leyton Orient before joining Blackpool in July 2020.
