Done deal: Southampton sign Golden Eaglets-eligible winger from Chelsea
Published: July 12, 2024
With a statement on their official website, Premier League new boys Southampton have announced the signing of Golden Eaglets-eligible winger Leo Umeh from Chelsea.
The Saints confirmed the club's new intake of academy scholars for the 2024-2025 season, with Umeh snapped up on a two-year scholarship after leaving Chelsea's Cobham academy.
Seven other promising teenagers will also start the 2024-2025 campaign as first year scholars, namely Korban McMullan, Hansel Adjei-Afriyie, Dylan Moody, Harry Gathercole, Thierry Rohart-Brown, Cameron Frederick and Nsemi Bassega.
The eight players have been promoted to Southampton's U18 team on a permanent basis, subject to FA approval.
The aforementioned players are eligible to be included on Southampton's Premier League roster as scholars/U21 players.
Introducing himself to the Southampton fans, Leo Umeh described himself as a direct winger who likes to get at defenders, create chances in and around the box.
Umeh will be aiming to make his competitive debut in the U18 Premier League in the forthcoming season.
He links up with Nigerian trio Derrick Abu, Princewill Ehibhatiomhan and Zach Awe at the Southampton academy.
