Did Man Utd overpay for N124b CB Leny Yoro? Ex-Man City man Nedum Onuoha has his say
Published: July 18, 2024
Warri-born former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has had his say on whether Manchester United have overpaid for new signing Leny Yoro.
The Old Trafford outfit confirmed the acquisition of the French youngster for a fee close to €70m (equating to N124b in Nigerian currency) on Thursday, stealing a march on arch-rivals Liverpool and Real Madrid in the process.
The former Lille centre-back has become the second summer signing of the Premier League giants and one of the most expensive teenagers ever which has raised some eyebrows.
The 18-year-old wanted to join Real Madrid but the Spanish giants weren't ready to match his valuation, and that paved the way for Manchester United to get his signature.
The decision of the club to cough out a huge amount of money has divided the football fanbase with pundits and fans sharing different opinions.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Onuoha also jumped on the topic with the former Manchester City centre-back stating that time will tell on whether Manchester United have overpaid for their latest acquisition
"Ultimately, the success will be defined by how he performs for United in the future should he sign," Onuoha said.
" I think It is a lot of money for that age but the fact is that it is for one of the hottest prospects in European football.
"If United have got this one right, then in years to come, we will be saying the value didn't matter from the start."
The Red Devils have started the transfer window strongly with the signing of Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee but there are expectations from the fans that there would be more quality signings arriving at Old Trafford before the end of the transfer period.
