No going back: Super Eagles centre-back joins MLS club FC Cincinnati
Published: July 24, 2024
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that Major League Soccer club FC Cincinnati and Portuguese setup Boavista have reached a club-to-club agreement for the transfer of Nigeria international Chidozie Awaziem.
Subject to the issuance of an International Transfer Certificate and P-1 visa, the Super Eagles central defender will join FC Cincinnati on a permanent deal.
Awaziem has already agreed personal terms with FC Cincinnati and will heading to the United States in the coming days to complete his transfer to the American top flight club.
The Porto-reared player is in the final year of his contract at Boavista, who needed to get him off the wage bill in order to balance their books.
He initially joined Boavista on loan in 2020 before the deal was made permanent the following season.
Awaziem, 27, made 59 appearances in all competitions for the Panthers and provided three assists while logging 4,984 minutes.
He enjoyed loan spells at Alanyaspor and Hajduk Split in back-to-back seasons before his return to Boavista last term.
Apart from the aforementioned teams, the former Junior Elkanemi of Jos midfielder has also worn the colours of Çaykur Rizespor and Leganes.
Awaziem was a member of the Nigeria squad to the 2019, 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was named to the roster for the 2018 World Cup.
FC Cincinnati are second in the Eastern Conference standings with 48 points from 25 games in the regular season.
