'This is where the club needs to be' - Aribo looking forward to Southampton's Premier League return
Published: July 27, 2024
Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo is looking forward to Southampton's return to the English Premier League.
A product of the Charlton Athletic academy, the left-footed player was key as Southampton secured promotion to the top flight, starting all their games in the playoffs.
Aribo is determined to prove his worth in the Premier League at the second time of asking.
His first season with Southampton ended in relegation, with the 28-year-old making 21 appearances and scored two goals in that fateful campaign.
Everything indicates that the Super Eagles number 10 is in the plans of manager Russell Martin for the upcoming campaign, considering the fact that he has started all the three matches played by the Saints in pre-season, including Saturday's
3-1 win over Montpellier.
Aribo is eager to face the challenge of competing against some of the world's top players in the Premier League.
Speaking after the friendly against the French team, Aribo told the official webpage of Southampton: "This is where the club needs to be, so we just need to showcase what we’re capable of. For me it’s always improving, getting better.
“I set myself high standards and it's important for me that I reach those heights that I want to and just show what I’m capable of and the talents God has given me.”
After friendlies against Oxford United, Millwall, Lazio and Getafe, Aribo and his Southampton teammates face Newcastle United in their Premier League opener at St. James' Park on August 17.
