'Same thing happened in the first game' - Oshoala reveals why Super Falcons lost to Spain
Published: July 29, 2024
Asisat Oshoala has blamed poor finishing for back-to-back defeats suffered by the Super Falcons at the ongoing Olympic Games in France.
Against world champions Spain on Sunday, Randy Waldrum's side put up a strong defensive showing for the ages, only to concede from a dead-ball situation in the closing minutes of the contest.
Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas scored what proved to be the game winner in the 85th minute with a cross-shot goal from a free-kick.
Of the twelve counties participating in the 2024 Olympic Games, only Spain and United States have a better defensive record than Nigeria, who have conceded two goals after two matches.
On the flip side, Nigeria have the worst attack in the whole tournament with no goals scored.
Although Rasheedat Ajibade has caught the eye with her flair and versatility, the Atlético de Madrid forward has been found guilty of missing clear-cut chances.
Oshoala made her Olympics debut against Spain but the former Barcelona sensation was largely anonymous as Waldrum adopted a defensive game plan that he uses against stronger opponents.
Speaking to Totori News in the mixed zone, Oshoala said: "All I can say is that I'm proud of the team performance, I think we played good.
"We played against the world champions and we had our chances, we had opportunities to score against Spain. The same thing happened to us in the first game.
"We were not clinical and we just need to be clinical upfront and if we start scoring goals we can compete with any team in the world."
Next up for the Super Falcons is a must-win game against Japan on Wednesday at Stade de la Beaujoire - Louis Fonteneau in Nantes.
