Ex-Liverpool defender names the Nigerian striker Arsenal should sign as upgrade to Euro 2024 star
Published: August 05, 2024
Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has urged Arsenal to sign Victor Osimhen who he feels will be an upgrade on Kai Havertz.
Not many gave the 2024 European Championship star a chance to succeed when he joined the Gunners from Chelsea last summer but he took everyone by surprise.
He scored 14 goals across all competitions but his exploits haven't prevented Arsenal from pursuing a move for a striker in the current transfer window.
They missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City for the second consecutive season last term and the club want to sign a new striker to close the gap on the Citizens.
They have been linked with Benjamin Šeško, Viktor Gyökeres, Dominic Solanke as well as Osimhen but the north London club aren't progressing in talks with any of the ditto strikers at the moment.
Speaking on ESPN FC on the need for Arsenal to sign a striker, Nicol believes that the club should sign Osimhen as an upgrade on Havertz.
"If somebody said to you, you can either have Havertz or Osimhen. Are you really going to take Havertz?
"You are not going to take in a million years over Osimhen. So, if you can afford it, I agree with Shaka's point.
"When it really matters and you have only one chance in a game, again the question is it going to be Havertz or Osimhen.
"Everybody will say he scored in the Champions League final but the truth is he takes too many chances to score that Osimhen won't."
The Gunners have made one major signing so far in the current transfer window which is Riccardo Calafiori and are still hoping to sign a new central forward.
They will open their Premier League campaign against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 17 at the Emirates.
