Done deal: After Martins and Babayaro, Newcastle United sign another player of Nigerian heritage
Published: August 08, 2024
With a statement on their official website, Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Denmark U21 international of Nigerian descent William Osula from Sheffield United.
Although the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, it has been widely reported that Osula has ended his association with the Blades in exchange for ten million pounds plus add-ons that could see him eventually costing £15m.
Osula will be aiming to emulate fellow players of Nigerian heritage Obafemi Martins and Celestine Babayaro who made 172 appearances between them during their time at Newcastle United.
The Danish-Nigerian starlet started his career with Superliga club FC Copenhagen before making a switch to Sheffield United in 2018 and progressed through the ranks to the first team.
The 21-year-old was unable to secure a spot in the first team and that informed the decision to join Derby County on loan for the 2022/2023 season.
He enjoyed more game time with the Rams as he featured in 21 appearances across the campaign and chipped in five goals and one assist.
Having garnered more first team experience with Derby, he was able to feature prominently for Sheffield United last season with twenty four games under his belt in all competitions.
Upon the relegation of the Blades to the Championship, Newcastle have decided to grab his signature as the Magpies seek to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new campaign.
Osula is mainly a striker and can also play as a winger and face stiff competition mainly from Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon for a place in Eddie Howe's team.
