Olympics final: Outstanding Olise loses with France in history-making game; Spain's Omorodion no-show
Published: August 09, 2024
2021 Super Eagles invitee Michael Olise has missed out on the gold medal at the football event of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris after Spain came from behind to secure a 5-3 win over France in a history-making final staged at the Parc des Princes.
Friday evening's clash is the highest-scoring men’s gold-medal final in Olympic history, surpassing Great Britain’s 4-2 victory over Denmark in 1912.
Olise was France's standout player at the 2024 Olympics, registering seven goal involvements in six matches.
The Bayern Munich summer signing went the distance in the final but another forward of Nigerian descent in Samu Omordion was omitted from Spain's matchday roster, all but confirming that his transfer to Chelsea is imminent.
Omorodion was scheduled to undergo a medical before the final between France and Spain.
Spain fell behind 1-0 in the 11th minute after Millot scored for France, but Fermín López netted twice and Álex Baena contributed another goal to give Spain a 3-1 lead at halftime.
Eleven minutes from time, substitute Maghnes Akliouche halved the deficit when he rolled the ball into the net following a free-kick from Olise, before Jean-Philippe Mateta netted from the spot in the third minute of stoppage time to take the game to extra time.
Sergio Camello was the hero for Spain in extra time, with the substitute bagging a brace to secure La Roja their first Olympic title since 1992.
