No. 9 jersey taken from 2011 Flying Eagles invitee amid Ipswich Town's links with prolific Blackburn striker
Published: August 13, 2024
Ipswich Town have confirmed the squad numbers for the 2024-2025 season ahead of their Premier League opener against Liverpool.
According to the official webpage of the Tractor Boys, 2011 Flying Eagles invitee Freddie Ladapo has been assigned a new shirt number for the forthcoming season, with the center forward moving from number 9 to number 29.
Ipswich Town's number 9 kit is now vacant, fueling speculation that the shirt is being reserved for a potential new signing.
The Premier League new boys have been linked with Blackburn Rovers' Republic of Ireland attacker Sammie Szmodics.
Szmodics enjoyed a prolific campaign with Blackburn Rovers in 2023-2024, scoring an impressive 33 goals in 48 all-competition appearances, and has picked up from where he left off last season by scoring in his first competitive game in the new Championship season.
Ipswich Town have also been linked with Panathinaikos forward Fotis Iaonnidis but could be priced out of a deal, with the Greek Super League club valuing him at 30 million euros.
Ladapo wore the number 9 on the back of his jersey for two consecutive seasons at Ipswich Town, after joining from Rotherham United.
The former Crystal Palace forward has slipped down the pecking order after struggling for goals and playing time in 2023-2024, so much so that he was loaned out to League One club Charlton Athletic for the second half of the campaign.
Ipswich Town's number 29 jersey had been vacant following the transfer of Kyle Edwards to Oxford United in 2023.
