'I don't think you can get rid of him' - Ex-Scotland captain warns Rangers against selling Dessers
Published: August 13, 2024
Former Scotland captain Barry Ferguson has issued a strong warning to Rangers, urging the club not to sell Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers this summer despite growing criticism from pundits and supporters.
Dessers, who joined Rangers last summer, has faced significant scrutiny despite his impressive performances for the Light Blues.
The 29-year-old forward enjoyed a successful debut season with Rangers, netting 22 goals and providing 9 assists across all competitions.
His contributions were vital to the team's success, yet he has continued to face criticism from some quarters.
Undeterred, Dessers has carried his form into the current campaign, scoring two goals in three games so far.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson defended Dessers and cautioned Rangers against letting him go.
"Big Dessers comes in with another goal," Ferguson said.
"I know he comes in for a lot of criticism, but I spoke about it last week—one thing the big man gives you is 100 percent. He's scored two goals in two games, 22 goals last year, and I don't think you can get rid of him."
Ferguson acknowledged the need for additional competition in the striker position but praised Dessers' attitude and work ethic.
"I know Rangers still need in my eyes another number nine to come in for competition, but I like the big man's attitude, sometimes he lacks that bit of quality, but if he had that quality he'd be playing somewhere else in a different league."
Dessers is set to play a crucial role in Rangers' upcoming Champions League qualifying match against Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday night.
The Nigerian striker scored the equalizer in last week's fixture and will be hoping to lead his team to victory against the Ukrainian side.
