Search for a new striker: Reigning African POTY valued at N227b out of reach for Arsenal
Published: August 13, 2024
Arsenal could be priced out of a move for reigning African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen, who is heavily linked with a departure from Napoli before the close of the summer transfer window.
According to Football Insider, the Gunners will find it difficult to land top targets Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres in their search for a new striker.
Osimhen signed a new deal at Napoli last December, with a release clause of 130 million euros (approximately N227 billion in Nigerian currency) but there's a gentleman's agreement in place that would allow leave the Diego Maradona Stadium this summer once his asking price is met.
Due to the economic crisis caused by Financial Fair Play Regulations, clubs interested in the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Boot winner have been unable to trigger his release clause.
Eddie Nketiah's departure from the Emirates Stadium cannot be entirely ruled out despite a proposed move to Marseille falling through after the Ligue 1 side failed to meet his valuation.
The one-cap England international has been linked with a switch to Bournemouth in recent days as a replacement for club record departure Dominic Solanke who has been acquired by Tottenham Hotspur.
It is being speculated that Arsenal could use the funds from the potential sale of Nketiah to sign a marquee centre forward like Osimhen.
The Gunners have held a long-term interest in the 25-year-old and attempted to sign him in 2016 after he won the top scorer award of the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup, but he ended up joining VfL Wolfsburg in Germany.
