'We need a Victor Osimhen' - Club legend Mikel pleads with Chelsea to go all out to sign African POTY
Published: August 15, 2024
Former Super Eagles skipper John Obi Mikel has urged his former club Chelsea to go all out to sign reigning African Player of the Year and fellow countryman Victor Osimhen.
The Premier League outfit are still in search of a striker after their failed pursuit of Spanish-Nigerian forward Samu Omorodion.
Osimhen is one of the forwards on their radar but striking a deal for him is looking problematic at the moment due to his huge valuation and with the player reportedly favoring a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
With Napoli still interested in signing Romelu Lukaku, there is still a chance that the Stamford Bridge outfit grab the services of the Nigeria international this summer.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel has urged Chelsea to sign the Napoli striker despite the inadequacies he feels he had in his game.
"I keep saying we need a Victor Osimhen. Go and get Victor Osimhen. Please get that deal done because we need an out-and-out striker. He is a player that is going to get us goals.
"Yes, I have said it, technically maybe not the best, goalscoring, he will get us goals and that is what we need. We need a striker who will stay around the box like Haaland.
"Technically, it's not very good. A lot of people talk about his technique but he is a killer. He gets you goals and that is what we need."
The Blues have spent tons of money in the past couple of windows and a recent report indicates that they have 43 first team players, including 16 forwards.
They will have to downsize the number of players on their budget at the moment in order to boost their chances of signing Osimhen before the end of this transfer period.
