Nottingham Forest fullback feared injured ahead of Super Eagles squad announcement for AFCONQ
Published: August 17, 2024
Super Eagles full back Ola Aina, appeared to have suffered an injury during the Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the City Ground on Saturday.
Aina's injury would be worrying news for the national team's coaching staff as the Nigeria Football Federation is expected to announce the roster for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda before the end of August.
Chris Wood opened the scoring for Nottingham Forest in the 23rd minute, with Antoine Semenyo equalizing for Bournemouth four minutes before the final whistle.
Aina, who had been playing well, suffered the injury just nine minutes into the second half.
Before his injury, the Nigerian fullback had made two successful tackles, two clearances, one interception, and an 83% pass completion rate.
Unfortunately, his contribution was halted as he appeared to twist his ankle just nine minutes into the second half of the Nottingham Forest versus Bournemouth clash.
After being tended to by the medical team, Ola Aina had to be substituted and was replaced by Harry Toffo during the match.
Similarly, Danilo, a Brazilian defender, also had to make an early exit due to injury, with Ryan Yates taking his place in the fourteenth minute.
Meanwhile, Taiwo Awoniyi, another Super Eagles player, entered the game by substituting Chris Wood in the 72nd minute.
The severity of Ola Aina's injury remains uncertain, but it comes as a significant setback for Nottingham Forest.
The team will be hoping to avoid a repetition of the previous season's struggles with relegation as they strive to make a positive start to the 2024/2025 campaign.
