Okonkwo emulates Super Eagles striker Maja: Wrexham GK named in EFL Team of the Week
Published: August 19, 2024
Former Arsenal goalkeeper of Nigerian descent Arthur Okonkwo has been named in the official English Football League Team of the Week, following the footsteps of Super Eagles striker Josh Maja, who was named in last week's team.
The team consists of the best players in the English Championship, League One and League Two and Okonkwo's performance for Wrexham in their League Two fixture against Bolton Wanderers on Sunday at the Toughsheet Community Stadium got him a spot in the team.
The Hale End Academy product produced seven saves to help Wrexham keep their first clean sheet of the campaign as they played a barren draw with the former Premier League side.
Okonkwo was alert to deny Szabolcs Schon's volley in the opening minutes, before denying Aaron Collins' effort and Josh Sheehan's free-kick from breaching his goal, all of which came in the first half.
He continued his magnificent performance in the second period, denying Dion Charles' from putting Bolton ahead in the 47th minute and continued his fine form till the blast of the final whistle to earn a Whoscored.com rating of 8.34.
The team has two players from Sunderland while Wrexham, Hull City, Walsall, Chesterfield, Burton Albion, Colchester United, Watford, Peterborough United and Coventry City have one apiece.
Below is the full team
Goalkeeper: Okonkwo (Wrexham)

Midfielders: Billy Bodin (Burton), Jack Payne (Colchester), Edo Kayembe (Watford), Kwame Poku (Peterborough), Haji Wright (Coventry)
