'Sensational' - Ex-Arsenal striker reacts to Ndidi's brilliant moment during Leicester v Tottenham
Published: August 19, 2024
Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has hailed Wilfred Ndidi for his brilliant moment during the Foxes' 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the last game on matchday one of the new Premier League season, played on Monday at the King Power Stadium.
Pedro Porro gave the away side the lead, turning James Maddison's in-swinging cross home with Leicester City defenders caught ball-watching.
Skipper James Vardy restored parity for Leicester City, heading the ball past Guglielmo Vicario from Abdul Fatawu's wonderful delivery.
As early as the 6th minute in the clash, Ndidi incredibly cleared the ball off the line to deny Spurs from taking the lead with goalkeeper Mads Hermansen ensuring that his effort was not in vain as he had to save the follow-up effort from Brennan Johnson.
Smith who was on commentary duty for Sky Sports praised the experienced Nigerian midfielder for his heroic effort
"That was a sensational clearance from Wilfried Ndidi off the line. It really was," he was quoted as saying by the BBC.
Ndidi played the entire duration of the game, made 57 touches, completed 79% of his passes, had one shot on target, won four of his eight ground duels, won the only aerial duel he contested, made four clearances and two blocks.
Italian-Nigerian defender Caleb Okoli was named by Steve Cooper in the matchday squad but didn't participate throughout the contest.
Anglo-Nigerian striker Dominic Solanke made his debut for Spurs and also lasted for the entire duration of the game.
