Confirmed: Ex-Inter Milan midfielder Theophilus Awua departs Atalanta for SPAL
Published: August 22, 2024
With a statement on their official website, Italian Serie C club SPAL have announced that the signing of Nigerian midfielder Theophilus Awua has been completed.
Awua was once regarded as one of the top Nigerian talents but has fallen off the radar in recent years after failing to break into the first team of top division clubs in Italy.
By signing a two-year deal with SPAL, the 26-year-old has departed Europa League holders Atalanta for good.
Born in Makurdi, the Football College Abuja product counts Inter Milan, Crotone and Spezia among his previous clubs.
Since landing in Italy in the 2016-2017 season, he has enjoyed loan spells at Juve Stabia, Rende, Bari, Livorno, Cittadella and Pro Vercelli.
Awua has experience of playing in the Italian third tier, having made 128 appearances in the division, netting nine goals while producing three assists.
The presentation of the latest white and blue acquisition, Awua, took place on Wednesday afternoon with technical director of SPAL, Alex Casella in attendance.
He is familiar with some of his new teammates, having played with Antenucci in Bari, with Rosafio in Cittadella and with Bachini at Juve Stabia.
