'He is very good' - Sevilla coach explains why Ejuke was not handed debut against Las Palmas
Published: August 22, 2024
Sevilla manager García Pimienta has revealed why Chidera Ejuke was not handed his debut during his side's Spanish La Liga opener against Las Palmas last Friday.
The Super Eagles forward joined the Spanish side on a free transfer from CSKA Moscow this summer, becoming the club's first signing of this transfer window.
The 26-year-old took part during pre-season and also featured during the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield and was credited with the assist for Sevilla's only goal against the Premier League giants.
However, he missed the Palanganas' La Liga opening game against Las Palmas despite being in the matchday squad and the club needing injection of more quality in the attacking third in the clash.
Speaking ahead of their clash against Villarreal tomorrow, Pimienta revealed why he didn't hand the former Liverpool trialist his debut against Las Palmas.
"He is very good, ready to play. We had doubts about whether he would start or not." Pimienta told the club's official website
"The last fifteen or twenty minutes were the best for us, subduing Las Palmas and creating clear scoring opportunities.
"I didn't consider the change because I saw that the team was doing well
Pimienta preferred Lucas Ocampos over Ejuke in the clash and the Nigerian forward will now have to work harder to force his way into the starting lineup as Ocampos is one of Sevilla's longest-serving players.
The eight-cap Nigeria international has been largely underwhelming in recent years which made him lose his place at CSKA Moscow and must seek to avoid the same with seven-time UEFA Europa League champions.
