'Didn’t quite find the spark' - Expert insists Solanke not the perfect replacement for Tottenham icon Kane
Published: August 25, 2024
Former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen CEO, Keith Wyness has suggested that Dominic striker is not the perfect replacement for Tottenham Hotspur icon Harry Kane.
Kane departed the north London club last summer for Bayern Munich and despite links to 2023 Super Eagles invitee Gift Orban, Romelu Lukaku and some others, they didn't sign any replacement for the English striker.
Ange Postecoglou used Son Heung-Min and Richarlison as central forwards last season but the departure of the club icon was still felt as they were unable to secure a Champions League spot for the second consecutive season.
The club eventually decided to get a replacement for their record goal scorer by signing Anglo-Nigerian striker Dominic Solanke this summer with a club-record fee.
He made his debut in Tottenham's Premier League opener against Leicester City last Monday, missing some goal-scoring opportunities to open his account for his new club.
Speaking on Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness stated that Spurs were yet to replace Kane despite the arrival of Solanke.
“Daniel Levy has always been very good at selling second-level players like Emerson Royal or Oliver Skipp at a good market cost.
“He’s done it very well. Spurs have always had a long line of these players, often in midfield.
“But they’ve not quite found the replacement for Harry Kane yet, for me. We’ll see what Solanke does. He didn’t quite find the spark against Leicester.
“Striker is the area I’d be most concerned about for this season at Tottenham. But business-wise, they’ve had a good window.”
Chelsea Academy product Solanke missed the 4-0 thrashing over Everton yesterday due to an injury and it remains to be seen whether he will be fit enough for their trip away to Newcastle next weekend.
