U18PL Cup: Nigerian fullback on target for Leicester City but Man Utd score 97th minute winner
Published: August 27, 2024
There was late drama in the U18 Premier League Cup match between Leicester City and defending champions Manchester United at Leicester City Training Ground on Tuesday afternoon.
United were trailing by a goal with eleven minutes of normal time left but came from behind to secure a victory, thanks to
Gabriele Biancheri's match-winning goal from the spot in the seventh minute of second half stoppage time.
Foxes U18s head coach Adam Barradell handed starting berths to three teenagers of Nigerian descent in the shape of Olabade Aluko, highly-rated Finland U17 international centre-back Maxwell Aluko, and Laolu Omobolaji.
After a goalless first half, Leicester City broke the deadlock through Aluko who converted a spot kick three minutes before the hour mark.
Gabriele Biancheri fired Manchester United level with a low drive in the 79th minute and scored again in stoppage time to ensure victory for the visitors.
Aluko was not on the pitch prior to the game-winning goal, having been replaced in the second minute of stoppage time.
The 17-year-old is beginning to make a name for himself as a goalscoring defender as he scored Leicester City's first goal in the new season, against West Brom in the U18 Premier League on August 17.
The young Foxes are back in action on Saturday when they face Chelsea in the U18 Premier League.
