2011 Flying Eagles invitee faces uncertain future as Ipswich Town sign Lagos-born forward
Published: August 28, 2024
2011 Flying Eagles invitee Freddie Ladapo is facing an uncertain future at Ipswich Town, with the Premier League new boys officially confirming the signing of Lagos-born Republic of Ireland international Chiedozie Ogbene from Luton Town on Wednesday morning.
Ogbene becomes the fifth forward the Tractor Boys have signed in the summer transfer window, following in the footsteps of Omari Hutchinson, Liam Delap, Jack Clarke and Sammie Szmodics.
The former Cork City and Limerick player has put pen to paper on a four-year contract with Ipswich Town.
Ogbene has a bit of Premier League experience, having made 30 appearances in the division for the Hatters and scored four goals over the course of the 2023-2024 season.
Freddie Ladapo appears surplus to requirements, given that he was not called up for the first two competitive games contested by Ipswich Town in the new season.
Another indication of his uncertain future is that the number 9 jersey was taken from him and assigned to new signing from Sunderland, Jack Clarke.
Ladapo has slipped down the pecking order after struggling for goals and playing time in 2023-2024, so much so that he was loaned out to League One club Charlton Athletic for the second half of the campaign.
The 31-year-old received four call-ups for Premier League games during a spell with Crystal Palace and made his solitary appearance in the top flight against Manchester United at Old Trafford in September 2017.
Ipswich Town could cash in on Ladapo before the transfer window closes for business as he has entered the final year of his contract with the club.
