No going back: Ipswich Town on the brink of signing Nigerian forward after Ladapo's departure
Published: August 30, 2024
After the departure of 2011 Flying Eagles invitee Freddie Ladapo whose deal was mutually terminated on Friday, August 30, Ipswich Town are on the brink of confirming the signing of another Nigerian forward.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Ipswich Town have agreed a deal with R.S.C. Anderlecht for the signing of Tudor Mendel-Idowu, a product of the Chelsea academy.
The Tractor Boys are said to hold the 19-year-old in high regard which informs their decision to bring him back to England just a year after he left Chelsea for Anderlecht.
Kieran McKenna's side are trying to improve their attack before tonight's deadline and are also in negotiations for Armando Broja and Arsenal's forward Reiss Nelson.
Mendel-Idowu featured for Anderlecht youth side RSCA Futures last season, playing in 16 games in the Challenger Pro League, scoring once.
He didn't make his debut for Chelsea's first team before his exit last summer and hasn't debuted for Anderlecht's first team, which shows that he doesn't have the experience to play at the top level yet.
Ipswich Town have signed more experienced forwards this summer with the arrival of Omari Hutchison, Liam Delap, Jack Clarke and cap-tied Irish-Nigerian forward Chiedozie Ogbene, thereby questioning the role Mendel-Idowu will play at the club.
They have started the season with back-to-back losses against Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively, and will be seeking their first victory of the season tomorrow against Fulham at Portman Road.
