Done deal: Wolverhampton Wanderers sign left-sided Nigerian defender from Chelsea
Published: August 31, 2024
With a statement on their official website, Wolverhampton Wanderers confirmed the deadline day signing of left-sided Nigerian central defender Saheed Olagunju from Chelsea.
Olagunju has left Chelsea during the second year of his scholarship after learning that he would not be offered a professional deal at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season.
The 17-year-old joined Chelsea as an U12 from Charlton Athletic and was a member of the side that won the U17 Premier League Cup in 2023-2024.
He went the distance as the Blues defeated Wolves 3-1 to win the U17 Premier League Cup last April.
Overall, Olagunju is credited with nine appearances in the U18 Premier League and also featured for Chelsea in the U18 Premier League Cup.
He made his debut for the development squad in a Premier League Cup match against Colchester United in January 2024.
Olagunju has been described as a very tall and athletic left-sided defender who is also comfortable with the ball.
Defensively, he likes to be on the front foot, comfortable defending on the high line and has athleticism to defend the space in behind.
Olagunju will initially start his Wolves career with the club's U18 team and the plan is gradually introduce him to the U21 setup as the season progresses.
