Summer signing from Chelsea, Benin City-born CB among 5 Nigerians eligible to represent Liverpool in PL
Published: September 15, 2024
Liverpool have submitted their squad list for the first half of the 2024-2025 season following the conclusion of the summer transfer window, with five youngsters of Nigerian descent eligible to represent the Reds.
Clubs can include as many U21 players as they like and these players do not count towards the 25-man squad limit.
Emmanuel Airoboma (17), Louis Enahoro-Marcus (18), Lucky Omoruyi (18), Rio Ngumoha (16) and Folami Onanuga (18) have been included on the U21 roster as they were all born on or after January 1, 2003.
Liverpool confirmed the signing of Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea this month after the five-step review process was completed.
The investigation process known as the five-step review is required before any academy player can be signed.
Although Ngumoha will start his Liverpool career with the U18s, the first year scholar trained with the club's first team during this month's international break and has also worked out with the development squad.
None of the above-listed players of Nigerian descent has been included in a Premier League matchday squad.
Onanuga and Omoruyi signed their first professional contracts at Liverpool last season, while Benin City-born central defender Louis Enahoro-Marcus and midfielder Emmanuel Airoboma are second year scholars.
Airoboma, Onanuga, Omoruyi and Enahoro-Marcus have all made appearances for Liverpool in the U18 Premier League.
The five teenagers of Nigerian descent will be aiming to emulate Jordon Ibe, Sheyi Ojo and Ovie Ejaria who rose through the youth ranks to make appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League.
