PL Cup: George's second half hat-trick inspires Chelsea to 6-3 win against Brentford
Published: September 15, 2024
Chelsea's development squad began their Premier League Cup campaign with a 6-3 win against Brentford at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.
Chelsea boss Filipe Coelho handed starting berths to two players of Nigerian descent Tyrique George and Somto Boniface.
Nigeria U20 international Benjamin Fredrick was missing from Brentford's matchday squad.
A Deivid Washington goal sandwiched between a brace from Ashley Hay meant the visitors were ahead at the break.
George diverted a cross past the Brentford goalkeeper to level the scores two minutes into the second half and gave Chelsea the lead for the first time in the game six minutes later when he volleyed home.
Brentford suffered a blow in their bid to equalize after Ishe Samuels-Smith forced an own goal, with Headman diverting the substitute's cross into his own net.
Isaac Holland slotted into the bottom corner to reduce the deficit at minute 66 but the young Blues restored their two-goal advantage in the 77th minute after another own goal.
With seven minutes left on the clock, George completed his hat-trick by firing past Eyestone to make it 6-3.
Chelsea return to Premier League 2 action with a home game against West Brom on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
