Osimhen sets new personal record after assist in Galatasaray's 3-1 win against PAOK
Published: September 26, 2024
Victor Osimhen notched another assist as Galatasaray defeated PAOK 3-1 on matchday one of the league phase of the Europa League on Wednesday night to set a new personal record.
Making his third start for the Turkish champions, the Nigeria national teamer forced an own goal from Ghanaian defender Abdul Rahman Baba less than three minutes into the second half.
Dries Mertens delivered a corner to Osimhen, whose header was deflected by the former Chelsea player into his own net, wrong-footing PAOK goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski.
After Giannis Konstantelias brought the game back to parity, Osimhen was involved again in the buildup to Galatasaray's equalizer in the 75th minute when he fed Yunus Akgün, who slotted with aplomb to restore the home team's one-goal lead.
It was Osimhen's third consecutive assist for Galatasaray, earning himself a new personal record in the process.
According to the statisticians at OPTA, Osimhen provided an assist in three consecutive official matches for the first time in his professional career at club level.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year notched an assist on his Galatasaray debut against Rizespor and followed that up with another assist in the Intercontinental Derby against Fenerbahce last weekend.
Osimhen, who is still searching for his first goal this season, had a couple of opportunities to end his mini goal drought.
Just before halftime, the 25-year-old leapt highest to meet Abdülkerim Bardakcı's cross but headed the ball narrowly off target, before seeing his shot saved by the PAOK goalkeeper at minute 63.
Osimhen did not play the full ninety minutes, making way for Mauro Icardi in the 78th minute.
