Teenage Barcelona striker among 28 players named in Libya's squad for Afconq against Nigeria
Published: September 27, 2024
The Libyan Football Federation have announced the Mediterranean Knights squad list for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Nigeria, with twenty-eight players part of the group.
The Mediterranean Knights are set to face the Super Eagles in two matches in October, with the Super Eagles hosting them in exactly two weeks time, specifically October 11, while the return leg will hold in Libya on October 15.
Following a poor start to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the Libyan Football Federation fired Serbian manager Micho and appointed Nasser Al-Hadiri as the new coach ahead of the games with Nigeria.
Nasser Al-Hadiri has handed a call-up to Barcelona youth team striker Ahmed Elmsmari, who was a non-playing substitute in a 2-1 loss to Benin last month.
The 18-year-old played for the youth teams of Atlético Madrid and Rayo Vallecano before joining Barcelona in the summer transfer window and has received a second call-up to the national team even though he has yet to make his first team debut for the Spanish giants.
Libya face a tough task on their hands to qualify for next year's Africa Cup of Nations as they sit bottom of Group D with one point, three less than table toppers Nigeria.
