WSL: Super Falcons star Payne makes home debut for Everton in loss to Man Utd
Published: September 29, 2024
Super Falcons star Toni Payne is still without a win as an Everton player, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
On her home debut, the Toffees were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United in a Women's Super League clash on Sunday afternoon.
Payne made her first appearance in the WSL on the opening day of the season, in a 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove at the Broadfield Stadium in West Sussex last weekend.
Against the Red Devils, Everton coach Brian Sørensen opted to start Payne from the bench at Walton Hall Park.
Grace Clinton scored what proved to be the game-winning goal after just four minutes when she intercepted a loose pass from the defence, cut inside before slotting it past the Everton goalie Courtney Brosnan.
With Everton searching for an equalizer, Sørensen made a triple change in the 64th minute as Lucy Hope, Karoline Olesen and Katja Snoeijs made way for Heather Payne, Emma Bissell and Toni Payne.
Everton had a couple of chances to equalize but were not clinical enough.
In the 7th minute, Katja Snoeijs' goalbound effort was cleared off the line and in the 57th minute, Lucy Hope saw her header saved.
In their next fixture in the Women's Super League, Payne and her teammates travel to the English capital to face Arsenal on October 6, four days after their meeting with Newcastle United in the League Cup.
