After first UCL goal and assist, Lookman matches feat of Atalanta's highest non-Italian goalscorer
Published: October 02, 2024
Ademola Lookman scored and assisted as Atalanta beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League matchday two fixture played at Arena AufSchalke on Wednesday evening.
The Super Eagles star forward got the assist for the first goal, playing a pass into the penalty area and Berat Djimsiti put it home in the 21st minute.
In the 36th minute, he got a golden chance to double the away side's lead and get his name on the scoresheet, when he struck a first-time shot against the woodwork.
A minute before the end of the first half, he was set up by a pass from Sead Kolašinac and he made no mistake this time around to find the back of the net and score his first ever goal in the competition.
According to the statisticians at Opta, Lookman has become the second player in Atalanta's history to score and assist in a Champions League game, with the first being Duván Zapata, Atalanta's highest non-Italian goalscorer.
The former Colombia international is the highest-scoring foreigner in the history of Atalanta with 82 goals in 191 appearances.
Zapata scored and provided an assist in Champions League matches against FC Midtjylland (October 2020) and Manchester United (November 2021).
Three minutes into the start of the second half, Raoul Bellanova wrapped up the scoring, heading Davide Zappacosta's precise cross past the goalkeeper.
Lookman was replaced at the hour mark, with Mateo Retegui coming on as his replacement for the last thirty minutes of the game.
The Ballon d'Or nominee has been in fine form for the defending Europa League champions with his strike against Shakhtar being his third of the season in six appearances.
