'It's the best offer I've had so far' - Herve Renard admits he almost accepted Super Eagles job
Published: October 03, 2024
French manager Hervé Renard revealed that he nearly accepted the Super Eagles head coach position following discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Renard is currently unemployed after leaving his role as France women's national football team coach following the end of the 2024 Olympic Games.
The NFF was seeking a foreign technical adviser after Finidi George resigned, having failed to secure wins in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin in June.
Ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda, Nigeria engaged in talks with Renard and other foreign managers about the role.
In an interview with French sports daily L'Equipe, via Sport-Ivoire, Renard confirmed these discussions, describing the offer as the best he had received but ultimately declined due to certain clauses that didn't align with his preferences.
"I almost went to Nigeria. I weighed up the pros and cons for a few days, even a few weeks before refusing it. It is the best offer I have had so far, the rest didn’t suit me," he explained.
After unsuccessful negotiations with Renard, the NFF announced Bruno Labbadia as the team's manager ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
However, disagreements over tax issues prevented an agreement between both parties.
Consequently, the NFF appointed Austin Eguavoen as interim manager.
Eguavoen led the team in the matches against Benin and Rwanda in September and is set to continue in this role for the upcoming double-header against Libya in October.
