'Could have passed our defence more easily' - RFS coach rates Osimhen higher than Icardi
Published: October 04, 2024
Speaking after his side's 2-2 draw with Galatasaray on matchday two of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night, RFS coach Viktors Morozs admitted that Victor Osimhen is a more dangerous player than Mauro Icardi.
The Super Eagles forward missed the game due to an injury and Icardi spearheaded the attack as Galatasaray lost a healthy lead for the second consecutive game.
Dries Mertens gave the Turkish giants the lead in the 12th minute, and Yunus Akgun doubled their advantage, putting Davinson Sánchez's cross into the back of the net.
Janis Ikaunieks pulled one back for the home side before the end of the first half, and Lasha Odisharia restored parity in the 54th minute.
In his post-match reflection, Morozs admitted that the result could have been different if Osimhen had played, stating that the Nigeria international is more dangerous than Icardi.
In quotes relayed by Haber Global, Morozs said: "It would have been different if Osimhen had played. He would have added strength to Galatasaray. Osimhen is a different player than Icardi. In my opinion, he could have passed our defense more easily."
"It would have been difficult to play against such a forward. His not playing today was a deficiency for Galatasaray. Osimhen is a strong and dangerous player. It would have been difficult for us if he had played today."
Speaking after the game, Galatasaray gaffer Okan Buruk also admitted that the Napoli loanee could have helped his side get a better result.
The 25-year-old helped the Lions open their Europa League campaign with a victory over Greek side PAOK, having registered two assists in the fixture but couldn't help them make it back-to-back wins yesterday due to injury.
The result leaves Galatasaray in 8th position on the standings, the same points as Ajax Amsterdam and Eintracht Frankfurt, the two teams just above them and are two points adrift from the top of the table.
