'He will' - Eguavoen confirms Rangers dual-national player in line for Super Eagles call-up in November
Published: October 10, 2024
Austin Eguavoen, the interim manager of the Super Eagles, has assured that Cyriel Dessers will have an opportunity to showcase his skills during the upcoming international break in November.
Tongeren native Dessers is still eligible to represent Belgium, his country of birth, since the six matches he played for the Super Eagles did not commit him to Nigeria, his mother's homeland.
Dessers was left out of the current Nigeria squad facing Libya in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The decision to exclude him from the current squad sparked a discussion within the Nigerian sports community, given Dessers' impressive form and Victor Osimhen's absence.
Dessers has been in scintillating form this season, netting 7 goals and contributing 3 assists in 13 games in all competitions.
Eguavoen selected a squad of 23 players for the upcoming matches against the Mediterranean Knights, including three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders, and seven forwards.
The Super Eagles will play Libya in Uyo on October 11, followed by a return match in Benghazi on October 15.
During a pre-match conference on Thursday evening, the 59-year-old coach addressed the absence of Dessers from the squad and assured.
When asked about the likelihood of Dessers' comeback in November, Eguavoen reassured Nigerians that "he will" indeed return to the squad
Dessers has represented Nigeria in six matches since his debut in a 1-1 draw against Tunisia in October 2020.
Dessers' most recent appearances for Nigeria were in March 2024 during friendly matches against Ghana and Mali.
The 29-year-old has scored two goals for Nigeria since joining the squad.
This news will surely motivate Dessers as he aims to maintain his impressive form with Rangers leading up to November.
