Five tactical tweaks interim Super Eagles coach Eguavoen must make to beat Libya
Published: October 11, 2024
As the Super Eagles prepare to host Libya at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday evening, interim coach Augustine Eguavoen faces a crucial test in the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualification campaign.
Following a convincing 3-0 win over Benin Republic and a disappointing draw against Rwanda, Eguavoen must ensure his team returns to winning ways against Libya.
Currently topping Group D with four points, the Super Eagles aim to increase their lead and edge closer to securing a spot in the 2025 African Cup of Nations.
To achieve this, Eguavoen must employ the following five key strategies to avoid defeat against Libya:
1. Revitalize Attacking Flair
The Super Eagles' attacking potency was evident in their 3-0 thrashing of Benin Republic, but it was lacking in the goalless draw against Rwanda.
Eguavoen must rejuvenate his attack, possibly by starting with a more dynamic frontline combination, in Victor Osimhen's absence.
2. Strengthen Defensive Solidity
Considering Libya's pedigree, it is expected that the Super Eagles would have extended periods of possession, leaving their opponents with the only option of counter-attacking, which will demand solidity at the back from the three-time African Champions.
Eguavoen should focus on organizing his defense, ensuring his center-back pairing is cohesive, and the full-backs provide adequate support.
3. Midfield Control
The midfield battle will be crucial against Libya. Eguavoen must select a balanced midfield trio capable of dominating possession, winning the tackle, and creating scoring opportunities. Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi could form a formidable combination.
4. Exploit Libya's Weaknesses
Libya's overall squad would definitely have some weaknesses which the fierce attacking line of the Super Eagles can capitalise on.
Eguavoen should instruct his team to target these weaknesses with precision passing, swift counter-attacks, and clinical finishing.
5. Maintain Home Advantage
The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium's electric atmosphere at full capacity can intimidate visiting teams.
Eguavoen must rally his players to feed off the home crowd's energy, press Libya from the start, and make the most of their territorial advantage.
