Onyedika in the news again for wrong reasons as Club Brugge star sent off for second time in 4 games
Published: October 22, 2024
Raphael Onyedika's evening took a disastrous turn during Club Brugge's UEFA Champions League clash against AC Milan.
The Super Eagles midfielder was shown a straight red card with only five minutes remaining in the first half, marking his second dismissal in four matches across all competitions.
Onyedika has been in the news for all the wrong reasons over the past one month due to disciplinary issues.
The FC Ebedei product was red-carded in a Pro League clash against Charleroi on September 27, 2024 and reacted angrily to his substitution in his last outing in the Belgian top flight against KVC Westerlo three days ago.
Onyedika's ill-fated challenge on AC Milan's Tijjani Reijnders, intended to win the ball, ended with the Dutchman writhing in pain.
The referee, Felix Zwayer, promptly issued the red card after a VAR review, deeming the foul too dangerous.
The Nigerian international's untimely exit dealt a significant blow to Brugge, who eventually lost 3-1 courtesy of Christian Pulisic's 34th minute strike and a brace from Reijnders whom he fouled.
Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian international Samuel Chukwueze, came off the bench on the hour mark, bagging an assist for Milan's third goal of the game in the 71st minute.
With Club Brugge trying to turn things around, having won only once in their last three Champions League games, manager Nicky Hayen may need to adjust his plans due to Onyedika's absence.
The Blau-Zwart will resume their Champions League campaign when they welcome English Premier League side Aston Villa on November 6th.
