'It's a nice number' - Rangers striker Dessers happy to reach double digits for goals but wants more
Published: November 11, 2024
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has shared his thoughts after netting the match-winning goal in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Hearts.
Dessers' strike in the sixth minute proved crucial, as his teammates couldn't find the net thereafter.
His goal-scoring exploits have been impressive since joining Rangers last year, with 32 goals and 12 assists in 74 appearances across all competitions.
Despite this, some fans feel he could improve. However, his importance to Rangers' attack was evident on Sunday.
The 29-year-old's goal capped a solid individual display, with three shots on goal before being substituted for Danilo in the 78th minute.
Coach Clement has consistently favored Dessers as his first choice, ahead of Danilo and Hamza Igamane.
Speaking to Premier Sports after the match, he reflected on his performance and scoring his 10th goal of the season.
"It's a valuable three points, we struggled a little bit in the second half. It's always difficult after a European away game, on Thursday, late night game, long flight, but we got the three points and that's the most important thing," Dessers stated.
"Obviously, it's always nice to score at Ibrox, just to see the ball in the net, I think it was a good moment for us to score to go ahead and, 10 goals, like you say, it's a nice number, I'm happy to get there already now, but I want more."
Dessers' goal-scoring form has sparked debate about his exclusion from Nigeria's national team.
He last represented the Super Eagles in March and remains without an appearance ever since.
The recent squad announcement for the AFCON qualifiers raised eyebrows, with Umar Sadiq preferred over Dessers despite his underwhelming performances for Real Sociedad.
Fans have criticized Eguavoen's decision, highlighting Dessers' impressive goal tally and Umar's lackluster displays.
With 10 goals already this season, Dessers will aim to continue his scoring streak and silence his critics.
