African POTY Lookman finds the net as Atalanta set new club record for calendar-year goals since 1930
Published: December 22, 2024
Ademola Lookman marked his return to action in Italy with another crucial goal for Atalanta, just days after winning the prestigious African Player of the Year award in Marrakesh, Morocco.
The Nigerian forward, who missed the 6-1 Copa Italia victory over Cesena earlier in the week, was back on the pitch in Atalanta's Serie A clash with Empoli at the Gewiss Stadium.
Before the match began, Lookman took a moment to present his African Player of the Year trophy to the passionate Atalanta fans, a gesture that was well-received by the crowd.
Lookman then showcased his goal-scoring prowess, netting his side's second goal to put Atalanta ahead heading into the halftime break.
Empoli had taken the lead in the 11th minute, with Lorenzo Colombo opening the scoring. However, Atalanta responded in the 34th minute as Charles De Ketelaere equalized for the hosts.
Just before the halftime whistle, Lookman restored Atalanta's advantage, finishing off an assist from Nicolò Zaniolo to give them a 2-1 lead.
The second half saw Empoli fight back, with Samuele Esposito converting a penalty to level the score at 2-2.
However, De Ketelaere would prove to be Atalanta’s hero once again, scoring the decisive goal to secure a 3-2 victory for the Serie A club.
Charles De Ketelaere's goal was Atalanta's 124th since the start of 2024, breaking their club record for goals in a single calendar year in all competitions since 1929-1930, according to Opta.
Lookman was substituted in the 69th minute, with Lazar Samardzic taking his place.
Despite the substitution, Lookman’s contribution to Atalanta's win further cemented his status as one of the standout players of the season.
The forward has been instrumental in Atalanta’s impressive campaign, helping propel them to the top of Serie A and into contention for a spot in the Champions League knockout phase.
With 8 goals and 4 assists in 13 league appearances this season, Lookman continues to be a key figure in Atalanta's title challenge, making them strong contenders for the Serie A crown.
