The incredible stat of Onuachu against West Ham; unmatched by Salah, Haaland, Palmer and Isak
Published: December 27, 2024
Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu delivered a remarkable performance in Southampton's 1-0 defeat to West Ham, recording a stat unmatched by the Premier League's top four scorers Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland Cole Palmer, and Alexander Isak.
Making his second start of the season, Onuachu played the full 90 minutes of the match and showed his immense potential despite the loss.
Known for his aerial strength and clinical finishing, the towering Nigerian striker posted an incredible stat that highlighted his offensive threat throughout the game.
In a post by OptaAnalyst on X, Onuachu attempted eight shots in the game against West Ham, more than any player in the Premier League has attempted in a single match this season.
To put it into perspective, even prolific goal-scorers like Salah, Haaland, and Isak have not registered as many shots in a single match this term.
"Paul Onuachu attempted eight shots for Southampton today (vs West Ham). No player has had more in a single Premier League game across 2024-25 so far," OptaAnalyst noted.
Despite Southampton's defeat, Onuachu's efforts were undeniable. His shots resulted in an expected goal (xG) of 0.57, with an expected goal per shot of 0.07.
This suggests that, while he may not have found the back of the net, his attacking presence was significant throughout the match.
Since his move to the Premier League, Onuachu has struggled to make an immediate impact.
However, this performance, with a remarkable shot tally and consistent offensive play, could be a turning point for the Nigerian forward.
