Isak equals Ameobi's Premier League goal tally for Newcastle with strike against Man Utd
Published: December 31, 2024
Alexander Isak matched Shola Ameobi's Premier League goal tally for Newcastle United when he scored in the Magpies’ 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night.
The Swedish striker opened the scoring in the fourth minute, slotting Lewis Hall’s deflected cross into the bottom corner, leaving Andre Onana rooted to the spot.
Joelinton doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 19th minute, outjumping Lisandro Martínez to head past Onana after a brilliant set-up by Anthony Gordon, who delivered an incisive ball from the right side of United's defense.
Isak has now scored 43 goals in 69 Premier League games, equaling Ameobi’s tally, which the former Super Eagles striker achieved during his 295 league appearances for the club.
However, the Sweden international still has a long way to go to match Ameobi’s overall contribution to Newcastle.
Ameobi scored 79 goals in 398 appearances across all competitions, ranking 14th in the Magpies’ all-time top scorers' chart while Isak currently has 48 goals in 87 games for Newcastle in all competitions.
The victory marked Newcastle’s first win at Old Trafford since 2013 and was also Eddie Howe’s first away victory against Manchester United as a manager.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils are struggling in 14th place in the Premier League standings, sitting just seven points above the relegation zone and 13 points adrift of the final UEFA Champions League qualification spot.
While Newcastle are now three points shy of fourth-placed Chelsea, courtesy of the victory over Ruben Amorim's side.
