Confirmed: Hoffenheim sign 2023 Super Eagles invitee Gift Orban from Lyon
Published: January 02, 2025
With a statement on their official website, German Bundesliga club TSG Hoffenheim have announced the signing of 2023 Super Eagles invitee Gift Orban, who joins from French outfit Olympique Lyon.
Orban has put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract, until the end of the 2028-2029 season.
Orban joined Hoffenheim from Lyon in exchange for nine million euros plus €3 million (including one million euros guaranteed) in performance-related add-ons, and a 7.5% interest on the capital gain of a potential future transfer.
The dual-national striker, who is also eligible for Togo through his mother, featured in sixteen Ligue 1 games during his time at Lyon as well as five times in Cup competitions including two in the Europa League, accumulating a total of twenty one games.
Orban, who scored five goals for Lyon, notably distinguished himself early in the season with a decisive brace against Strasbourg, securing a spectacular 4-3 victory for Les Gones.
Seeking a fresh sporting challenge and the desire to explore new opportunities, Orban has decided to move to the Bundesliga, following stints in Norway, Belgium and France.
"In Gift Orban we have found exactly the fast striker with good depth that we were looking for," Andreas Schicker, Managing Director of Sport at TSG said.
"Gift has repeatedly demonstrated his goal threat and his joy of playing in his previous positions, so we are convinced that his skills will give our team greater variability in attack."
Orban links up with Super Eagles central defender Kevin Akpoguma at Hoffenheim, who sit fifteenth in the Bundesliga table with fourteen points from fifteen games.
