How 17yo forward Trevan Sanusi fared on Newcastle United debut, English media react
Published: January 13, 2025
Talented forward of Nigerian descent Trevan Sanusi made his professional debut on Sunday as Newcastle United came from behind to beat Omar Sowunmi's Bromley 3-1 in an Emirates FA Cup clash at St James' Park.
Magpies boss Eddie Howe made nine changes for the third round tie, one of which saw Denmark U21 international of Nigerian descent, William Osula make a rare start.
Another forward with a Nigerian background Sanusi was named among the substitutes for the first time as a Newcastle United player.
With 21 minutes remaining, Howe gave him his senior debut by bringing him on as a substitute for Osula, who had scored the Magpies' third goal.
Aged 17, Sanusi trained with Newcastle United's first team during pre-season preparations, featuring in friendly matches against Hull City and Girona.
Based on the player ratings from football websites covering Newcastle United, Sanusi gave a descent account of himself on his official debut for the Magpies.
Chronicle Live awarded him 7 out of 10 for his display and added, "Caused one or two problems."
Geordie Boot Boys handed him a rating of 6 and had this to say about the Anglo-Nigerian teenager, "His first competitive appearance for Newcastle, the youngster looked nervous but did enough to warrant an appearance in the future."
The Northern Echo awarded him a 5, and said: "Will have thoroughly enjoyed his senior debut".
Sanusi has represented England at U15, U16, U17 and U18 level and signed his first professional contract at Newcastle United last summer.
