'He could go' - Former Sunderland midfielder weighs in on the future of Rangers striker Dessers
Published: January 17, 2025
Former Sunderland midfielder Derek Ferguson has weighed in on the transfer speculation surrounding Cyriel Dessers amidst links from Italy and Spain.
The Nigerian forward has continued to be linked with moves to Cagliari in Italy and Leganes in Spain.
Dessers has lost his starting spot to Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane, fueling uncertainty over his future at the club despite a decent goal tally.
The 30-year-old has scored 13 goals and provided four assists in 32 appearances across all competitions this season.
However, the Nigerian international recently admitted in an interview that his situation in Glasgow has become difficult, a statement that drew criticism from Ferguson, who questioned his commitment to the club.
Speaking to Ibrox News, Ferguson expressed doubt over Dessers' passion for Rangers and suggested a January exit was likely.
"He's one of the club's highest earners. He'll come out and say he loves the club and whatnot, but I'm not so sure. I think he could go if the money is right. If Rangers can get him off the wage bill, that's a goer," Ferguson stated.
Both Cagliari and Leganes are reportedly seeking attacking reinforcements, making Dessers a prime target as the January transfer window nears its closure.
The Nigerian international is one of the top earners at the club, and his potential departure could help reduce Rangers' wage expenses.
For Dessers, a potential move could provide him with a fresh start to further prove himself this campaign.
